Post-1991 Ethiopia¶
The fall of the Derg in May 1991 ushered in a new constitutional order for Ethiopia, with Tigrayan political forces at its centre for nearly three decades.
The EPRDF Era and Ethnic Federalism¶
The Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) — led by the TPLF — established a ethnic-federal system that created the Tigray Regional National State (commonly "Tigray Region") with Mekelle as its capital. The period saw significant investment in roads, schools, health clinics, and hydroelectric infrastructure across Tigray.
Reform and Rising Tensions (2018–2020)¶
In 2018, Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister and initiated a sweeping reform agenda, culminating in a 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. The rapprochement with Eritrea and the marginalisation of the TPLF from federal power sharpened internal tensions. By late 2020 these fractures erupted into the Tigray War (2020–2022) — documented extensively in The Tigray War section.
Legacy¶
The post-1991 period reshaped Tigray's political, economic, and demographic trajectory. Its full consequences — including the war and its aftermath — remain a defining subject of this archive.
